Around 60 to 62 per cent voting has has been recorded in the seven Assembly seats of Gujarat where by-elections were held today.

Voting has been peaceful in stations in Dehgam, Danta and Sami in north Gujarat and Dhoraji, Jasdan, Chotila and Kodinar in Saurashtra, official sources said.

According to first-hand reports, there was 58 to 60 per cent voting in Danta, 52-55 per cent in Chotila, 60-65 per cent in Jasdan, 61 per cent in Kodinar, 70-75 per cent in Dehgam and 63.45 per cent in Sami and 58-60 per cent in Dhoraji assembly seats, they said.

A little over 12 lakh voters are eligible to exercise their franchise at more than 1,590 polling booths to decide the fate of 88 candidates including four women.

Over 8,000 security personnel have been deployed to ensure peaceful poll. Of the seven seats, six were held by the Congress while Kodinar seat was with the BJP. Except Chotila and Sami, by-elections in other five seats were necessitated following the election of their MLAs as MPs.

In Chotila, its sitting MLA Popat Jinjaria, died a few months back, necessitating the by-poll while Sami MLA Bhavsinh Rathod had resigned from the Congress to contest the Lok Sabha polls, which he lost.

The results for the by-elections will be declared on September 14.
