Ahmedabad-Mumbai double decker train:Watch these photos
Ahmedabad, 25 February, 2011

Central Railway minister Mamata Banerjee has proposed double decker AC train between Ahmedabad and Mumbai. If you have question how this double decker train actually looks, here are the photographs. These photographs were taken when the first double decker train was launched in India.

The first Double decker high speed-stainless steel AC coach capable of running at a speed of 160 kmph was manufactured at Rail Coach Factory (RCF).

In the new design, 128 passengers can be seated as compared to 78 passengers in Shatabdi chair cars, thus increasing the capacity by almost 70 per cent.

The overall height of double decker coach has been increased marginally (four and a half inches) keeping in view the constraints like overhead structures, bridges, electric traction equipment, platforms etc. so that these coaches can be used without modifying any of the fixed structures except for clearing some minor infringements. Space for the two decks has been generated by optimally using the well space between the two bogies. To save upon space, it was decided to use End-On-Generation configuration where power for train lighting and air-conditioning is supplied by two power cars, attached at both ends of the train.

The new air-conditioned design uses many superior technical features like aesthetically pleasing stainless steel body, high speed Eurofima design bogies with air springs for superior ride quality and many other safety related features. This coach is fitted with control discharge toilet system. The successful development of AC Double Decker Coach is a clear illustration of Indian Railways’ capabilities in design and manufacturing.

    Double Decker rail coach were already used by Western railway before few years – I have seen such train and even traveled in it. At that time coaches were not AC – so new thing is AC double Decker coaches.

    Why seats are too narrow ? If a person is fat even a bit will have a problem seating on it. The train really looks conjuncted. Now I understand how they could fit 128 in a 78 seater. I hope the train full of people does not look like a sheep carrier.

    GOVT HAVE TO DO THIS

    AHD—DELHI

    @sunny (london)

    ==No Luggage allowed==

    What the hell are you talking about ? Then definitely I will choose Bullock Cart over Double Decker Train.

    @Hiren,
    You are right. I think it was flying queen train between Bombay and Surat.
    Great Gujarati, Have you seen the seats at airplane passanger coach? They are almost similiar like them. Very rare chances to have sitting problem. About luggage? Think before initiating anything. It seems like you haven’t got enough trouble with air line travel. Suggestions like this gives ideas to collect more money from public, more opportunities to harrase travelling public instead of helping the public.

    I have not just seen them but travelled on them. I have no idea How can you compare a Plane and a train. Both are totally different things. Plane is far comfortable, entertaining and faster than a train in many ways.

    What do you mean “think before initiating anything” ? If there is any problem with the service then it can be sorted out but that does not mean the service must be eliminated completely. What kind of logic is that ? How would customers carry their luggage ? Ship them in a separate cargo or what ?
