The U.S. Mission to India is proud to report that student visa applications increased by 18% between the U.S. Government’s Fiscal Year (FY) 2011 and FY2010, for a total increase from 39,958 applications in 2010 to 46,982 in 2011 . The fiscal year extends from October through September; FY2011 recently ended on September 30.

To meet the ever-increasing demand for student visas, in FY2011 the U.S. Mission to India conducted extensive outreach in communities across the country, visiting academic associations, schools, and universities to reach prospective applicants and provide accurate visa information. The Mission significantly increased funding for the EducationUSA Advising Centers at the U.S.-India Educational Foundation (USIEF), which provides educational seminars and advising opportunities both in-person and via the internet.

More than 100,000 Indian students are currently studying at universities across the United States, and thousands more will join them in the coming academic year. This increase denotes the close people-to-people ties between the United States and India, and reflects the desire of highly qualified students to receive a world-class education in the United States.
