Glassboro, New Jersey, America, 27 December 2011
One person was killed in fire in a room of Royal Inn motel on Delsea Drive owned by Gujarati NRI.
Firefighters were called to the complex formerly known as the College Inn around 8:10 a.m. Sunday after some people staying at the motel smelled smoke coming from a second-floor room being occupied by 52-year-old Walter White. Motel manager Prem Patel said White lived there on a week-to-week basis.
Patel said 911 was called immediately and as responders rushed to the complex, he attempted to see if anyone could be seen inside the unit.
“We tried to open the door, but from the looks of it, no one appeared to be inside,” Patel said. “The firefighters came in and tried to do whatever they could.”
White was pronounced dead at the scene after the Glassboro Fire Department extinguished the fire with dry chemicals. It was declared under control within ten minutes.
Authorities have yet to determine a cause of the fire, however there was evidence that White, who has a number of addresses on record, had been smoking in the room, officials said.
The Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office, the county’s fire marshal and the local fire department is examining the case.
An autopsy is scheduled to be conducted today to find out what killed White.
