AMC starts a tent school for displaced children of river front

Ahmedabad, 2 January 2012

Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation(AMC) today opened a tent school in city’s Ganeshnagar-Piplaj area for displaced children of Sabarmati river front.

According to an official statement issued by the AMC, a Gujarati school has been activated from today onwards.

As per the guidance of Municipal Commissioner Dr. Guruprasad Mahapatra, the school board has set up the tent and other needed facilities to start a school for 313 children of standard 1-07. The AMC has prepared a list of 300 children who never went to school. Efforts are going on to involve them too in new tent school.

School children were served mid-day meal today. Children of std. 1 were given education kit and chocolate on the occasion of inauguration of the school.

It should be mentioned that illegal huts were removed from Sabarmati river front recently after Gujarat High Court gave a green signal. Those living in river front were relocated to Piplaj area. As there was no municipal school nearby, almost all children of displaced families had discontinued their study.
