Over 26 tonnes Chemically Dyed Fennel seeds seized from Unlicensed unit in Unjha

Mehsana: The Food and Drug Control Administration (FDCA) of the Gujarat government has seized more than 26 tonnes of fennel seeds allegedly laced with chemical dyes at Unava, near Unjha. The seized stock, valued at around ₹19.6 lakh, has been confiscated, and legal proceedings have been initiated against the accused.

The FDCA’s flying squad carried out surprise raids at the warehouse of M/s Bhargavkumar Pravinbhai Patel and the business premises of M/s Patel Rakeshbhai Talsibhai in Unava. Preliminary investigations revealed that chemical and non-edible dyes were allegedly being mixed with the fennel seeds to make them appear greener and more attractive. The inspection also found that neither establishment possessed the mandatory food safety licence required to operate such a business.

Minister of State for Health Praful Pansheriya said the Gujarat government would not tolerate any compromise when it comes to the health and safety of its citizens.

FDCA officials collected three statutory samples of the suspected fennel seeds and sent them for laboratory analysis. In addition, the entire stock of around 26 tonnes of loose fennel seeds found at the premises has been seized.

Pansheriya said the Food and Drug Department remains fully committed to protecting public health and added that enforcement drives against food adulteration and other illegal activities will be intensified in the coming days. DeshGujarat
