Gujarat’s Lajja Goswami wins Silver in CWG, Modi congratulates

Gujarati woman shooter Lajja Goswami continued India’s medal rush on the second day of the Commonwealth Games, winning the silver medal in pairs 50m rifle 3 position at the Dr Karni Singh Shooting Range here on Tuesday along with Tejaswini Sawant.
Lajja is from central Gujarat’s Anand town. Her father TilakGiri is priest of Shiv Mandir here. Shri Tilak Giri told media that while other children were playing with toys, Lajja played with guns in her childhood. She had also participated in Beijing Olympic. However she couldn’t secure victory there. Lajja had in past secured sixth place in world shooting championship held at Munich. She had won gold medal in Kerala last year defeating all national shooting champions. Lajja has been trained by Indian coach Sunny Thomas in Pune.
Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated Lajja for her victory. Modi on Tweeter congratulated Lajja by saying: “On behalf of all Gujarat, heartily congratulations to daughter of Gujarat, Lajja Goswami on her achievement of silver medal for India at CWG.”
Modi also mentioned Lajja’s victory in his Surat rally speech, and said he talked with Lajja over a phone to congratulate her. Modi said, the state of Gujarat will honor Lajja for her success, and also will extend help for further achievements.
In Commonwealth game, Lajja Goswami and Tejaswini totaled an impressive 1143 in prone, standing and kneeling stage, but still finished six points behind gold medalist Aqilah Sudhir and Xiang Wei Jasmine Ser of Singapore, who totaled 1149. Scotland’s Kay Copland and Jen Mcintosh (1142) settled for the bronze medal.
Tejaswini, the first woman shooter to win a world championship gold, scored 575 (prone 194, standing 190, kneeling 191) while Lajja totalled 568, including a 193 in prone, but she fell behind in standing and kneeling stage, managing scores of 188 and 187. Singapore’s Aqilah totaled 581, after a solid 199 in prone, and a 190 and 192 in standing and kneeling stage, while Xiang Wei managed 568 (prone 194, standing and kneeling 187).
