February 14, 2026
Surat: In a major boost to sports infrastructure, Veer Narmad South Gujarat University (VNSGU) Board of Management has granted approval for the development of the “VNSGU Sports Complex,” featuring multiple modern sports facilities on the university campus.
The ambitious project, estimated to cost around ₹400 crore, aims to establish Surat as a future “Olympic Training Hub” and provide strong support for local athletes to reach global platforms.
The ₹400-crore project will be implemented with financial support from the state government, central government, and CSR funding. Once completed, South Gujarat will, for the first time, have infrastructure capable of supporting Olympic-level training.
Olympic-standard swimming pool and high-performance centre
Along with the existing swimming pool on campus, a new Olympic-standard swimming pool will be constructed. Designed as per international specifications, it will include competitive lanes, a timing system, and a spectator gallery with seating for over 300 people. The facility will be suitable for state- and national-level competitions and could also host international training camps in the future.
A five-storey modern high-performance centre for indoor sports will also be developed, offering:
-
Coaching and fitness training
-
Strength science-based sports training
-
Physiotherapy and rehabilitation
-
Injury management facilities
Day-night cricket stadium and upgraded sports infrastructure
Under the project, the existing cricket ground will be converted into a 14,000-seat day-night stadium. The hockey ground and athletic track will be upgraded to meet international standards, while modern facilities will also be created for sports such as shooting, volleyball, kho-kho, and pickleball.
These developments will provide athletes with a comprehensive training and competitive environment within a single campus. DeshGujarat
