11 Held After Videos of Violent Attack, Vandalism in Gandhinagar Go Viral

Gandhinagar: A financial dispute over an alleged ₹1.1 crore fraud turned violent in Gandhinagar on Sunday night after two youths were allegedly stabbed and a car was vandalised during what police say was a pre-planned attack.

Today, the Infocity Police arrested 11 accused in connection with the case. As part of the investigation, the accused were taken to the crime scene for reconstruction of the incident after being paraded through the city with their hands tied with ropes. A video showing a group of men vandalising a car on a public road has also gone viral on social media.

According to police, the assault was allegedly planned to avoid returning money that had been collected from the complainant on false promises. The victims claimed they had paid the money after being promised a high-profile government appointment in Rajasthan and business opportunities.

According to the FIR filed by Utsav Patel, a resident of Nava Naroda in Ahmedabad, the dispute began in April 2025. He alleged that Mahendra Rathod, a friend of his father, Rohit Kumar, initially took ₹15 lakh in cash after promising to secure a dealership with Gujarat Alkalies and Chemicals Limited (GACL).

Patel further alleged that Rathod claimed to have strong political connections in Rajasthan and promised to get one of their associates, Shivujilal Chaudhary, appointed as Chairman of the Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation (RTDC). For this, Rathod and his son, Abhimanyu Singh Rathod, allegedly demanded an advance of ₹50 lakh, which was paid in January 2026.

The complainant claimed that the family eventually paid around ₹1.1 crore through bank transfers and other modes of payment. However, neither the dealership nor the promised political appointment materialised. As repeated demands for a refund went unanswered, tensions between the two sides escalated. Police said an argument had also taken place on May 17 over the pending payment.

According to the FIR, both parties later agreed to meet in an attempt to settle the dispute. The meeting was held at the gym of Patel’s friend, Bharat Singh Chandawat, in Gandhinagar. Police alleged that Mahendra Rathod and his son arrived on a two-wheeler along with around 10 associates, who were allegedly armed with knives, sickles, and wooden sticks.

The complaint states that the group attacked the victims while shouting that they would “settle the money” that day. During the assault, Rathod allegedly stabbed Chandawat in the back, while his son also attacked him with a knife, leaving him seriously injured.

When Utsav Patel tried to intervene, he was also allegedly attacked. According to the FIR, Sunil Chauhan, Hemant alias Lalabhai Chauhan, and Abhimanyu Singh Rathod stabbed him multiple times, causing injuries to his back, arms, legs, and abdomen. Both injured men were rushed to the hospital for treatment.

Gandhinagar Police have arrested 11 accused in connection with the attack. They were later taken to the crime scene for reconstruction as part of the investigation.

The accused have been booked under various provisions related to attempt to murder, criminal conspiracy, rioting, unlawful assembly, causing grievous injuries, and damaging property. Police said further investigation is underway to probe both the alleged financial fraud and the conspiracy behind the attack.
