Gujarat ATS Seizes ₹8.32 Crore Worth of Tramadol, Arrests Medical Stockist

Ahmedabad: The Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) has seized 2.08 lakh Tramadol tablets valued at around ₹8.32 crore and arrested a Rajasthan-based medical stockist allegedly involved in the illegal trafficking of the restricted psychotropic drug.

According to ATS officials, the operation was carried out on Thursday following a tip-off. A luxury private bus travelling from Ankleshwar in Gujarat to Pali district in Rajasthan was intercepted near Shahibaug in Ahmedabad.

During the search, officers recovered six cardboard cartons containing 416 smaller boxes labelled “Tramadol Hydrochloride IP Tablets 100 mg Scovidol-100.” In total, the ATS seized 4,160 strips comprising 2,08,000 Tramadol tablets. Officials said the consignment was accompanied by a tax invoice issued in the name of New Mahavir Medical, in which the tablets had allegedly been falsely declared as other medicines.

Tramadol is a restricted opioid painkiller and is classified as a psychotropic substance under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

Following the seizure, the ATS launched a manhunt for the owner of the consignment. The accused, Paresh Jain, originally from Rajasthan and currently residing in Valsad, Gujarat, was tracked down and arrested in Udaipur. A court has remanded him to seven days of police custody.

During questioning, Jain allegedly told investigators that since May 2026, he had procured 62.54 lakh Tramadol tablets through 25 consignments and supplied them to buyers in Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.

The investigation also revealed that Jain had earlier been arrested under the NDPS Act in Uttarakhand and Maharashtra in cases involving the seizure of codeine-based cough syrup.

Officials further said that after obtaining a medical stockist licence in May 2026, Jain was primarily engaged in the trade of Tramadol. His alleged links have also emerged in a recent narcotics case in Vapi, where four people were arrested last month with 2.38 kg of mephedrone, a synthetic stimulant drug. DeshGujarat
