Gujarat Kharif Sowing Reaches 14.91% of Normal Average, Led by Groundnut and Cotton

Ahmedabad: Gujarat has brought 12.72 lakh hectares of land under kharif cultivation so far this season, covering 14.91% of the state’s normal kharif sowing area of 85.30 lakh hectares, according to the latest Agriculture Department data as of June 29, 2026. The highest sowing has been recorded for groundnut and cotton.

Meanwhile, this is comparatively lower than last year. In 2025, over 33.91 lakh hectares were covered during the corresponding period. One of the main reasons for this could be the delay in the arrival of the monsoon.

Oilseeds have recorded the highest sowing progress among all major crop categories. A total of 4.29 lakh hectares has been sown under oilseeds, accounting for 14.64% of the normal area of 29.32 lakh hectares. Within the category, groundnut has emerged as the leading crop, with sowing completed on 4.13 lakh hectares, or 21.55% of its normal area.

Among other crop groups, cotton has witnessed encouraging progress, with sowing completed on 6.84 lakh hectares, covering 28.68% of its normal area of 23.83 lakh hectares.

Apart from this, vegetables have been sown on 41,696 hectares (15.60%), total oilseed crops on 4,29,305 hectares (14.64%), fodder crops on 72,589 hectares (7.13%), maize on 15,915 hectares (5.62%), and soybean on 15,406 hectares (5.48%).

Cereal crops have been sown on a total of 38,874 hectares (2.82%), pulses on 5,479 hectares (1.32%), while all other crops together have been sown on 7,98,150 hectares (20.99%).

Overall, Gujarat has completed sowing on 12,71,807 hectares out of the state’s normal kharif cultivation area of 85,30,803 hectares, as monsoon activity continues to expand across the state. Farmers are expected to accelerate sowing operations in the coming days if rainfall remains favourable.
