Torrential Rain Pounds Surat Amid IMD Red Alert; Several Areas Waterlogged

Surat: Amidst the red alert issued by the Indian Meteorological Department, heavy rains lashed Surat city on Monday afternoon, leaving many areas of the city waterlogged in just one hour.

Areas including Athwalines, Katargam, Varachha, Adajan, Udhna, Limbayat, Vesu, Piplod, Dabholi, Rander and Mahidharpura were flooded from knee to waist level, disrupting normal life. The rains started at the time schools, colleges and offices were dismissed, causing heavy traffic jams on the city’s main roads, while motorists had to face great hardship as many vehicles got stuck in the water.

Surat received more than three inches of rain in a single hour. People were forced to wade through water in areas including Rashi Circle in Katargam, Varachha Khand Bazar Garnala, the Udhna-Limbayat underpass, the Hodi Bungalow area, Athwa, Ved Darwaza, Narayannagar, Dabholi and the Gale Mandi intersection in Mahidharpura. In some places, bikes were almost submerged, while in Dabholi, an ambulance was also trapped due to waterlogging.

The impact of the heavy rain was also seen at Surat Railway Station. Passengers faced great difficulty as the station’s waiting area was filled with knee-deep water. The station premises and the roads outside were also submerged.

Visibility in the city decreased during the heavy rain, forcing motorists to drive with their headlights on even during the day. Heavy rain and waterlogging created long traffic jams on many roads.

Amidst the heavy rain, the Surat district administration has been put on alert. Control rooms have been made operational at all taluka Mamlatdar offices, while the 24-hour helpline number 1077 has been kept operational to help citizens. Fire brigade and rescue teams have also been instructed to remain ready.

District Collector Tejas Parmar said that an average of 382.25 mm of rainfall has been recorded in Surat district so far, with higher rainfall in Kamrej, Choryasi, Palsana, Mahuva and Olpad talukas. The water level of the important Ukai Dam is currently close to 310 feet, and the irrigation department is constantly monitoring the situation. The Collector has appealed to people to stay away from rumours and contact the district helpline 1077 in case of any emergency.

Meanwhile, heavy rain in the Mumbai and Palghar areas has affected several Western Railway trains due to waterlogging on the railway tracks. Following this, special help desks have been set up at Surat, Valsad and Vapi railway stations, and special buses have also been arranged for some passengers. Several trains, including the Ahmedabad-Mumbai and Ajmer-Dadar services, have been short-terminated or diverted.

The Meteorological Department has maintained a red alert, forecasting extremely heavy rain across South Gujarat, including Surat. It has also forecast heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and winds blowing at speeds of 40 to 50 kmph over the coming days. DeshGujarat
