Security Guard Arrested in Ahmedabad in Rooftop Rape Case

Ahmedabad: A security guard was arrested on August 9 for allegedly raping a young woman at a residential society in Ahmedabad’s Anandnagar area, police said.

According to police, the woman(23) from Kutch, who is studying interior designing, had gone to the society’s rooftop as per her daily routine for a walk at night when the accused, identified as Dharmasinh Ramshankarsinh, who belongs to Northern Indian State allegedly followed her. Police said he demanded sexual relations and, after she refused, allegedly restrained her, covered her mouth and raped her.

The accused allegedly used a wire around the woman’s neck during the assault and remained on the rooftop for about an hour. He then allegedly took her mobile phone, locked the rooftop door and fled.

Residents reportedly heard the woman’s cries and went to the rooftop, following which police were informed. The woman was taken to a hospital for treatment.

CCTV footage showed the accused using the lift to reach the rooftop and later leaving the premises, police said.

Sector-1 Joint Commissioner of Police Neeraj Badgujar said the accused was arrested from Hebatpur in the early hours of August 9. The accused, a resident of Hardoi district in Uttar Pradesh, had joined the society as a security guard only six to seven days before the incident.

Police said the accused had been working with different security agencies for around four years and had previously worked with Megh and Rajput Security Companies.

The incident has also raised questions about the verification and recruitment of private security guards. Under the Private Security Agencies (Regulation) Act (PSARA), security agencies are required to obtain the necessary licence, while guards are required to undergo prescribed training and police verification. Where firearms are issued, the required arms licence is also mandatory. DeshGujarat
