Disturbed Areas Act Extended for 5 Years in 30 Societies in Rajkot

Rajkot: The Disturbed Areas Act (Ashantdhara) has been extended for another five years in about 30 residential societies in the Bhaktinagar and Kotharia areas of the city. The state government’s decision has brought relief to thousands of residents.

Concerns had been expressed among locals over the expiry of the Disturbed Areas Act. Meanwhile, local leaders had demanded that the Act be retained to maintain the demographic balance of the area. Keeping this in mind, MLA Uday Kangad made a representation to the state Home Department and the Chief Minister, following which the government decided to extend the Act for another five years.

Locals say that over the past few years, some people had been trying to buy properties in Hindu-majority societies by offering high prices or through other means. According to them, if this process is not checked, it could lead to changes in the area’s demographic composition in the future.

After the extension of the Disturbed Areas Act, residents of societies including Nilkanth Park, Kedar Park, Meghaninagar, Mehulnagar, Marutinagar, Vivekanandanagar, and Devpara expressed their happiness. People gathered at several places, chanted slogans of “Jai Shri Ram,” and welcomed the decision by distributing sweets.

The Collector’s approval will continue remain mandatory for the sale of properties covered under the Disturbed Areas Act. Local residents believe the decision will ensure compliance with legal provisions in property transactions and help maintain social peace in the area.
