Positive talks with CM raise hopes of ending Morbi farmers’ protest over power poles

Morbi: There are indications that the farmers’ protest against the installation of electricity poles by a private power company in Jetpar village of Morbi taluka may be resolved within the next two to three days. Trustees of the Sidsar Temple Trust recently met Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghvi to present the farmers’ demands. According to the trust, the meeting received a positive response from the state government.

Manubhai Kaila, executive member of the Sidsar Temple Trust, said that the trustees met the Chief Minister and the Deputy Chief Minister at the Chief Minister’s residence on Friday. During the meeting, they raised issues related to fair compensation for farmers, minimizing damage to agricultural land, and relocating the proposed electricity poles.

Kaila said the response from the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister was encouraging, expressing hope that the ongoing agitation could reach an amicable resolution within the next two to three days.

Farmers in Jetpar village have been on an indefinite hunger strike since June 18. They are demanding adequate compensation for the electricity poles proposed to be erected by a private power company in their fields. They have also urged that the poles be installed along the field boundaries instead of through the middle of farmlands to minimize damage to crops and agricultural activities. Saturday marked the tenth day of the protest.

Meanwhile, the Morbi Ceramic Traders Association organized a car rally on Saturday in support of the farmers. The association, which represents around 2,600 ceramic traders, held the rally from Mahendranagar Chowkdi to the protest site in Jetpar village. A large number of traders participated with their vehicles, backing the farmers’ demands and urging the government to intervene and resolve the issue at the earliest. DeshGujarat
