July 01, 2026
Ahmedabad: The Food Department of the Amdavad Municipal Corporation’s (AMC) Health Department carried out extensive inspections of food business establishments across different zones and ward areas of the city under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, a press release said.
Between June 1 and June 30, 2026, the civic body’s food safety teams collected a total of 709 food samples. These included 22 samples of cold beverages (juice, lassi, ice cream, sherbet, shikanji and ice balls), 35 samples of sugarcane juice, mango milkshake and watermelon juice, 121 samples of cheese, milk and milk products, 28 samples of sweets, 26 bakery products, 73 salt samples, 37 samples of gram flour, flour and grains, 37 edible oil samples, 101 spice samples, and 229 samples from other food categories.
Of the sample reports received during the month, 46 samples were found to be either unsafe or substandard. Of these, two samples were declared unsafe, and court cases will be filed against the concerned food business operators under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. The remaining 44 samples were declared substandard, and cases will be filed before the Adjudicating Officer.
During the same period, AMC inspected 1,877 food business units across the city. A total of 545 notices were issued for violations of food safety norms. The authorities also destroyed around 2,748 kg and 1,269 litres of unfit food items. In addition, an administrative penalty of Rs. 10,29,500 was recovered, while 387 TPC (Total Polar Compounds) tests were conducted to check the quality of cooking oil.
The corporation has introduced a QR code-based feedback system to enable citizens to rate the cleanliness and hygiene standards of street food vendors and lari-galla units. Each registered vendor has been assigned a unique QR code, which customers can scan to submit feedback. AMC uses this feedback to monitor vendors and improve the quality of street food across the city.
So far, more than 10,000 street vendors have been registered under the initiative, and the civic body continues to receive public feedback on their services.
Based on public ratings, the current top five vendors include Facebook Panipuri near Anand Party Plot in Sardarnagar, Agarwal Kachori Centre near Delhi Darwaza in Shahibaug, Krishna Pakodi Centre near Jeevan Super Market in Ramol, Taste of South opposite Gujarati School in Vatwa, and Jai Kishan Pakodi Centre opposite Bhagwati Jewellers in Khokhara.
AMC said all registered food business operators are issued QR codes, and action is taken against those who fail to maintain the prescribed standards. Food business operators who have not yet registered have been urged to do so.
During the month, the Food Department also seized 450 kg of parcel lime, valued at Rs. 22,500, and 508 kg of Rifa Kapasia, valued at Rs. 73,660.
The civic body sealed four food business units during the month for violations of food safety norms.
On June 3, Munna Chinese and Mughlai, located at Al Aswad Shopping Centre near Sonal Cinema Road in Maktampura, was sealed due to unhygienic conditions and violations of Schedule 4 provisions.
On June 6, a coffee stall near Vijay Char Rasta in Navrangpura was sealed after pests were found inside the kitchen and violations of Schedule 4 norms were detected.
On June 10, Shri Matangi Dairy and Food Products, near Hinglaj Mata Temple in Kathwada, was sealed for operating without a valid food safety licence, maintaining unhygienic conditions and violating Schedule 4 requirements.
On June 20, Shri Vrishti Trading, a parcel lime business unit near Riyasat Party Plot in Kathwada, was sealed for operating without a licence under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and for maintaining unhygienic conditions.
AMC said it will continue intensive inspections of food business establishments in the coming days to verify hygiene standards, licences and registrations. It warned that any unit found operating without a valid licence or registration, or violating food safety norms, will face strict action under the Food Safety and Standards Act and the GPMC Act.
